TIVIS LEE O’QUINN, 69 years of age of Vansant, VA, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 22, 2012 in Bristol, TN, following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Finis and Matilda McCowan O’Quinn. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was a member of many civic clubs and philanthropic organizations and served on a variety of Boards of Directors in Southwest Virginia. Among his achievements, he served in the United States Army, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7360 and American Legion Post 164 where he earned lifelong membership status.

 

Tivis O’Quinn was a businessman in Buchanan County for 40-years, was president of Tivis O’Quinn Enterprises, Inc. and owned The Quick Stop convenience store in Vansant, Tivis’s Gift Shop, Tivis’s Outlet Store and a variety of commercial and residential real estate including the Vansant Post Office and the Veterans Administration Clinic.

 

Tivis O’Quinn had also served on the Board of Directors for Standard Savings and Loan in Grundy, VA, was a several-term past President of the Grundy Lions Club where he was a member since 1975, Zone Chairman for Lions Club International, Sight Chairman of the Grundy Lions Club, Chairman of the John Flanagan Water Authority, was elected a Buchanan County Precinct Chair for more than two decades and served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Asset Financial Corporation, a non-profit dedicated to growing small businesses.

 

In 2004, the Virginia Small Business Development Center honored Tivis by naming him Virginia Small Business Veteran of the Year.

 

Mr. O’Quinn was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Owens O’Quinn on July 8, 1995.

 

Survivors include 1-Son: Ryan O’Quinn of Calabasas, CA, Daughter-in-Law: Heather O’Quinn and 3-Grandchildren: Lila, Haley and Asher; 2-Sisters: June Owens of Bristol, TN, and Loretta Lafferty of Herndon, WV, and Hollister FL, and 1-Speical Friend, Laura Phillips of Grundy, VA.

 

Funeral Services for TIVIS LEE O’QUINN will be conducted Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 7:00 P.M. at the Vansant Baptist Church with Rev. Casey Stark and Rev. Alan Moor officiating with Graveside Services to follow Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, VA.

 

The family will receive friends on Wednesday at the Vansant Baptist Church starting at 5:00 P.M. with funeral services at 7:00 P.M.

 

Active Pallbearers will be Dr. Bobby Lafferty, Wayne Owens, Steve Lane Wood, Charles Ratliff, Dr. Ben Lafferty and Bill Keen.

 

Honorary Pallbearers will be Grundy High School Class of 1960, Roger Powers, James Keen, Earl Scott, Roger Daniels, Lodge Compton and Members of Grundy Lions Club.

 

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the Tivis O’Quinn Memorial Scholarship Fund of the Grundy Lions Club, P.O. Box 79, Grundy, VA  24614.

 

Full Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery by Members of Childs Gentry Post No. 7360 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
