OPAL MAY FIELDS BELCHER, 84 years of age of Ft. Myers, FL, formerly of Buchanan County and Miami Florida, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Hope Hospice, Cape Coral, FL, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Gracie McClanahan Fields. She was a graduate of Mountain Mission School and attended Radford College, and upon return to Buchanan County she worked in the Clerk’s Office.  She was a member of the Grundy Church of Christ. She left Buchanan County following her marriage to Moses Belcher and they moved to Miami Florida in 1949. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and retired from Miami Coral Park Senior High School where she served as the Treasurer and Registrar. Since 1965, the family enjoyed spending weekends in Key Largo, FL and Opal was proud of the successful restaurant that her son Craig owns and has operated since 1981.

Opal (Penny) moved to Ft Myers, FL in 2006 to be close to her son Steven and gave devoted care to her sisters Faye, Edith, Ruby and her brother-in-law Warren Cline during their time of need.  She loved living in Ft. Myers and watching her granddaughters as they completed their education and began careers.  Opal will be dearly missed by the many friends she kept in touch with through daily emails.  Everyone who knew Opal knew of her love of pets and especially her dear rooster, Harry.  She had a big loving heart for all of life and was known by all as a loving, kind, understanding and devoted friend. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Moses James Belcher, Jr., November 6, 2002; her brother, Dorsey H. Fields and 4-Sisters: Faye Fields Blankenship, Elsie Fields Cline, Edith Fields Yuhasz and Ruby Fields Cline.

 

She is survived by 2-Sons: Steven George (Jean) Belcher, Ft. Myers, FL, Dorsey Craig (Jeanette) Belcher, Tavernier, FL, 4-Grandchildren: Amanda Grace Belcher, Orlando, FL, Jill Denise Belcher, Ft. Myers, FL, Staci Lynne Belcher, Ft. Myers, FL, Craig Moses Belcher, Tavernier, FL, 2-Step-Grandchildren: Brittany Anne DeSantis, Tavernier, FL, Kristina Nicole DeSantis, Tavernier, FL, 1-Sister-in-Law: Fern Fields, Clintwood, VA, Many nieces and nephews, including: Janet Lueke, Flower Mound, TX

 

Funeral Services for OPAL MAY FIELDS BELCHER will be conducted Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Dan Payne officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, VA.

 

Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday evening at 6:00 P.M. with services at 7:00 P.M.

 

Active Pallbearers will be family and friends.
