JESSE STEWART,
100 years of age of Grundy, VA, passed away
Friday, December 14, 2012 at his home following a short illness. Born April
17, 1912 in Praise (Elkhorn City), KY, he was the son of the late William
Henderson and Luvicey (Vicey) Mullins Stewart. He was a resident of Buchanan
County most of his life and was of the Christian Faith. He was a graduate of
the National Radio Institute in Washington, D.C. A former miner and power
company lineman, he was a former employee of the Harman Mining Company. He
joined the Army Air Corps in June 1941, serving in England and Africa in the
319th Bomb Group. He received numerous medals and honors,
including the Oak Leaf Cluster, and was awarded a star by Gen. Doolittle
following the Tokya raid.
In 1946, he opened his own radio and electric
service business, running Stewart’s Radio & TV Service until his retirement
in 1977. He was a self-publisher, having transcribed numerous county census
books with the help of his wife and was a Kentucky Colonel. Jesse was VA
president of the Big Sandy Valley Historical Society and was a member of the
Dickenson County Historical Society and SW VA Historical Society. A former
Quartermaster of Childs Gentry Post 7360 of the VFW, he also served as
Officer in the Grundy Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol and Member
of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by his wife, Amy Leah Mullins Stewart, May 2007; 3-Sisters: Ollie Belle
Stewart, Shirley Stewart and Natsu Evelyn McClanahan; and 3-Brothers: George
Washington Stewart, General Baxter Stewart and Clarence Stewart.
He is survived by 4-Daughters: Gracie Jessceah

Marsha Fay (Joe) Tolbert, Fayetteville, NC, Flora Irene (Ernest J. “Bink”)

Clinard Stewart, Elkhorn City, KY, 4-Grandsons: Tommy (Tina) Clevinger,
Maxie, VA, Wayne Clevinger, Maxie, VA, Louie Clevinger, Jr., Maxie, VA, Sean
Joseph Stewart (Lindsay) Tolbert, Aberdeen, NC, 1-Great-Grandson: Caleb
Elijah Tolbert, Aberdeen, NC
Also, survived by numerous Nieces and Nephews.
Funeral Services for
JESSE STEWART will be conducted
Monday, December 17, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel
with Evg. Clint Stewart officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley
Memorial Park, Big Rock, VA.
Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home
Chapel Sunday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
Active Pallbearers will be Jesse Elliot Stewart,
Roger Mayhorn, Joe Tolbert, Ernest J. “Bink” Rush, Tommy Clevinger, Wayne
Clevinger, Louie Clevinger, Jr. and U.S. Army Captain Sean Joseph Stewart
Tolbert.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Nephews, Dr. J.P.
Sutherland, Jr. and Dr. Clint Sutherland.
Full Military Rites will be conducted at the
cemetery by Members of Childs Gentry Post No. 7360 of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars.
