ALTA YATES
LINDSAY, 97 years of age of the Leemaster section of Vansant, Virginia,
passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012 at her home following an extended
illness. Born in Buchanan
County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rosa Hagy Yates.
Alta was a graduate of Radford State Teachers College.
She taught school for 35 years, most of the time at Grundy Senior
High School. She also taught
knitting and ceramic classes for Southwest Community College.
During those years, she enjoyed traveling to Europe, Israel, Egypt,
Australia and many other countries with some of her students through the
International Exchange School.
She retired in 1980 and enjoyed having time to plant a garden each year. She
was a member of the Big Prater Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for
the adult ladies’ class for many years.
She was a worthy matron in the Order of The Eastern Star, Florence
Ann Chapter. She was a loving
wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mrs. Lindsay is preceded in death by her husband,
Lawrence Lindsay.

Also, survived by 7- Grandchildren: Barry, Greg and
Joel Watkins, Cindy Miller, Diane Calcaterra, Elizabeth and Joshua Lindsay,
and 5- Great Grandchildren: Sumner and Kazden Watkins, Lindsay and Cole
Miller and Ava Calcaterra.
She was preceded in death by 1- Daughter: Joan
Lindsay Holt in 1983, 4- Brothers: Bart, Glen, Clyde and Tyler Yates and 5-
Sisters: Hermie, Naomi, Faye, Leah and Estelle.
Funeral Services for
ALTA YATES LINDSAY will be
conducted Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Grundy Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Jeff Sloan and Rev. Larry Burton officiating with
entombment to follow in the Greenhills Memory Garden Mausoleum, Claypool
Hill, VA.
Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel,
Tuesday afternoon at 6 P.M. with services at 7 P.M.
Active pallbearers will be the men of the Big Prater
Baptist Church. Honorary
pallbearers will be grandsons and Dr. J. P. Sutherland, Jr.
