Alma
Gluck Pettit Williams, age 91, originally from Grundy, Va and more recently
from Okeechobee, Fla and Abingdon, Va, passed away Monday, November 26, 2012
after an extended illness. She was born in Blackey, Va on February 20, 1921,
the oldest child of William Anderson Pettit and Mollie Mae Stacy Pettit
Hamilton, and attended Milligan College and Radford State Teacher’s College.
She married Stafford Hoyt Williams in 1938, and was a long time member of
the Grundy Church of Christ. She was very proud of her career as a Buchanan
County public school teacher, spanning more than thirty years.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by
her husband, Stafford Williams, on February 14, 1999, and by siblings Alfred
Clark (“A.C.”) Pettit, Horace A. Pettit, Genevieve (“Geneva”) Z. Pettit
Horn, John Edsel Pettit, and Wanda I. Pettit Wedam.
She is survived by four children: S. Hoyt
Williams, Jr. and wife, Dawneda, of Wise, Virginia; Larry A. Williams and
wife, Elvis, of Red Oak, Texas; Keary R. (“Bob”) Williams and wife, Rita, of
Grundy, Virginia; and Lisa Lynn Williams von Frangenberg of Acworth,
Georgia; by 11 grandchildren: V. J. Williams, Duane Williams, Lucy Williams
Bowman, Stafford Hoyt (“Chip”) Williams III, Random Williams Strom, Keary R.
(“Robb”) Williams, Jr., Kris Williams, Josh Hughes, Ryan Hughes, Kara von
Frangenberg, and Zane von Frangenberg; and by 13 great grandchildren.
She is also survived by a sister, Lois
Pettit Koult, and special nephew, Col. Jack Wedam.
The family will receive friends at Grundy Funeral
Home on Thursday, November 29, 2012 from 10:00-11:00am. Funeral services,
officiated by Minister Bill Neeley, will immediately follow in the Grundy
Funeral Home chapel at 11:00am, with interment at Mountain Valley Memorial
Park in Big Rock, VA. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of
flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alma P. and Stafford H.
Williams, Sr. Endowed Scholarship at Appalachian School of Law, Attn: Karen
Harvey, 1169 Edgewater Drive, Grundy, VA 24614; or to the Buchanan County
Public Library, 1185 Poe Town Street, Grundy, VA 24614.
The family
expresses great appreciation to Alma’s friends and the staff at Westhaven
Retirement Center where she resided and was cared for in recent years.
