Sunday Musings w/ Shore Branding – 10-12-14

Branding and Digital Marketing

Branding and Digital Marketing

Welcome to another edition of #SundayMusings – the top news and stories that caught our attention from the past few weeks.  We have wrapped up our focus on LinkedIn and this week’s musings take us back to the core principle of branding.  Here are several branding-related stories that caught our attention:

#1 – 10 Social Media Mistakes That Could Be Hurting Your Brand – via HuffingtonPost.com

Premise: The vast majority of Americans are on social media which means your brand needs to be there (somewhere) too.  However, one mistake can be costly.  The writer puts together a list of 10 common mistakes that have been made in the past and continue to be made seemingly on a regular basis.

Thoughts: Interested in annoying your audience?  Do you want to cost your brand the equity that has been built over a long period of time in 140 characters or less?  If you answered “No” to these questions, you probably want to check out this list as, at the very least, a good reminder of what not to do with your brand’s social media pages and/or presence.

My “favorite” one here is #3 – “Getting too personal” and the examples from Amy’s Baking Compnay and KitchenAid.  You might want to take a step back from the keyboard before posting anything remotely similar to the meltdowns these brands had in the past. [Read more…]

Continuing our holiday spirit, this week’s #SundayMusings w/ Shore Branding has a Valentine’s Day twist to the top news in branding and digital marketing from the past week!

At the same time, I want to make a quick announcement and decision on the frequency of our #SundayMusings write-ups.  We’ll be moving to an every other week frequency moving forward due to several contributing factors.  What I would like to do is focus on a particular topic or storyline in each write-up.  This gives more time to come up with better stories that tie together under said umbrella.

#1 – How’s Your Brand’s Love Life – via Strategy-Business.com

Premise: After reading “Romancing the Brand”, the author of the article was able to ask a few questions to the author of the book about how brands can build deeper, more meaningful relationships with brands.

Thoughts: Beyond being a Valentine’s Day-related write-up, this article caught my attention for two reasons.  First, it looks like there is another branding book to put in the queue.  Second, the Radio Shack Super Bowl ad was used as an example of brand authenticity in its communication to consumers.  [Read more…]

Branding and Digital Marketing

Branding and Digital Marketing

Below you will find this week’s Sunday Musings, the top stories in branding and digital marketing that caught our eye.  Beyond two branding stories, there is a focus on mobile in this week’s headlines.

#1 – Foursquare Rolls Out Post-Check-In Mobile Ads – via ReviewTrackers.com

Premise: In an effort to increase revenue, Foursquare is now allowing business owners to advertise based on local check-ins at certain/specific locations.  The business is only charged when a Foursquare users clicks on the ad itself.  Two brands that are already using the service are Captain Morgan and Toys R Us.  However, brands will not be able to advertise based off of someone checking in at a competitor’s location.

Thoughts: As mobile grows and becomes more and more data rich, these types of efforts should be expected.  Assuming these ads aren’t too cumbersome for the end user, this should be an added benefit for all involved.  Foursquare increases its revenue stream, brands get their message out there in a relevant manner (targeting those that are checking in at specific, desired locations) and the end user may find a great deal for themselves from time to time.

Allow me to use this as an opportunity to remind you to go vote for the location-based app of your preference in our poll at the top right hand corner of this page. [Read more…]
