Branding and Digital Marketing

Welcome to the latest #SundayMusings with Shore Branding!  This week’s stories highlight the latest and greatest news as we head into 2015’s SXSW conference in Austin, Texas.  Are you traveling to SXSW this year?  If so, let us know what you think.  Below are the news stories that caught my attention …

#1 – “New Fitness Brand Radius Keeps SXSW 2015 ‘in shape’” – via MobileMarketingWatch.com

Premise: Fitness and wearables will play a large role in this year’s edition of SXSW in Austin and Radius will be looking to lead the way.  Radius, from NBCUniversal, works with RadiusFitness.com on personalized workouts for desktops and mobile devices.  The brand will be hosting and promoting itself throughout the festival.

Thoughts: Through sponsorship and branding at charging stations and through hosting across the festival, Radius is just one of a large number of brands looking to capitalize on SXSW’s popularity.  The brand is going to have to break out the big guns if it is going to want to break through the clutter at the event.

That said, it does make perfect sense for a brand that focuses on one of the hottest of hot topics – wearables – tries to make its mark at SXSW this year. [Read more…]

We are closing out February with a Valentine’s Day #SundayMusings – taking one last look at the branding and digital marketing news from brands and companies as they relate to Valentine’s Day.  Here are the holiday stories that caught my eye heading into and through the month.

#1 – “Love Across the Twittersphere” – via blog.twitter.com

Premise: The Twitter blog dives into some Twitter Analytics and how “love” is spread across the network.  Sweden comes out on top as the most “in love” country around the globe.  Twitter also takes a look at some of the most commonly used hashtags across the calendar year.

Thoughts: The Twitter blog is a great bookmark to see the latest and greatest from the site.  It hits on current and relevant news, holidays, sporting events and more.  I’m not sure what level of humor vs. sadness I find in the hashtags across the span of a calendar year.  (OK, it’s funny) [Read more…]

Super Bowl Ad Review 2015

It is that time again!  Last weekend’s Super Bowl XLIX managed to break the preceding year’s viewership record, drawing 114.5 million viewers vs. last year’s 112.2 million.  This year’s Super Bowl was one for the ages, even if my favorite team lost in heartbreaking fashion.  That also meant that more people were still glued to their TV as the game wore on and the brands that spent money for advertising late in the game got what they paid for – attention.

As we have done in the past (2014 & 2013), here is my Super Bowl ad review from a panel of one.  One important caveat for this year’s countdown – there are two countdowns here.  Welcoming a newborn to the family in mid 2014 leads to a complete bias for the sappy ‘Dad’ commercials.  So I’m ranking those separately.  They would be at or near the top of the regular countdown.  Aside from the Seahawks pulling on heart strings, the ads in the “second countdown” below also led to me needing to call my own timeouts.  Good grief.

The overall countdown: [Read more…]

Brand in Focus – Whole Foods

Our next “Brand in Focus” puts Whole Foods’ branding and digital marketing efforts under the microscope. The grocer has been growing here on the east coast and caught my eye over the past few months with its paid advertising efforts on Twitter and Facebook, announcing the grand opening of a new store in Marlboro, NJ. Digging into the company’s digital efforts there are a number of highlights and positives that caught my attention.

First, WholeFoodsMarket.com promotes its efforts across a number of social media sites, all of which we will tackle here. The landing page appeals to the eye with big, bold images scrolling behind the links. When you rollover the text on the left hand sidebar (below) you find a number of links to go to. [Read more…]

This week’s #SundayMusings focuses on one of the world’s largest sporting events going on right now, the World Cup. There have been a number of brands dedicating a significant portion of budget to ads revolving around the soccer/football tournament. Let’s dive right in!

#1 – World Cup 2014 – The World Cup, lived through the eyes of brands and marketing – via MarketingWorldCup.Tumblr.com

Premise: A continuously updated branding/marketing blog was created on Tumblr that keeps track of all branding and marketing-related news and stories around the World Cup.

Thoughts: While I can’t stand the Tumblr platform, this feels like a good place to start, no? From YouTube ads/clips to infographics to news on the World Cup’s sponsor (and “fake” sponsor) brands, this page has it all for you. [Read more…]

Brand in Focus – Starbucks

Welcome to another edition of ‘Brand in Focus’ – our look into the branding and digital marketing efforts of specific brands and companies. In this edition we’ll be focusing on one of the most talked about, successful brands to engage with its customers across social media … Starbucks.

Starbucks.com promotes its social media pages on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. However, before we even dive into each one, let’s take a minute to talk about their own web site. In preparing this entry, the ‘current’ landing page goes right into mobile marketing with a request to text them to receive offers over your phone. I happened to give this a whirl and was signed up for their SMS program and this was the second message that was sent my way: [Read more…]

Branding and Digital Marketing

Branding and Digital Marketing

After focusing on content marketing in the last edition, today’s #SundayMusings w/ Shore Branding focuses on some of the latest and greatest write-ups I’ve seen on digital marketing over the past few weeks.

#1 – Using Social Media to Influence Your Brand Image – via TheSocialMediaHat.com

Premise: Understanding what your brand image is and how social media can play such an important role in building that image is crucial in today’s world. Social media connects you with millions of people from around the world and can have an immediate and enormous impact on your brand and business … when done correctly; by engaging with your audience, having meaningful content, etc.

Thoughts: While a little bit older than we typically use here on Sunday Musings, The Social Media Hat is a great resource for digital marketing. This write-up takes a branding angle on your digital marketing efforts and how said efforts can impact your brand image. Whether you are looking to share opinions, looking for recommendations, or sharing other people’s work, social media can help take your brand to another stratosphere. [Read more…]

Branding and Digital Marketing

Branding and Digital Marketing

Welcome back to a new #SundayMusings w/ Shore Branding!  Our bi-weekly write-up has a new focus topic this week and that is content marketing.  Content marketing has become all the rage, but truth be told, I see it as a fancy phrase that is an extension of your branding efforts.  I’m sure many will disagree with this sentiment, but that’s my view on the latest catchphrase in marketing.

#1 – 9 Tips for Creating Content that Gets Shared – via JeffBullas.com

Premise: Jeff Bullas provides his top nine tips for creating content that gets shared.  From identifying your audience/target through “making information accessible”, Jeff provides a good amount of context for each of his nine tips.

Thoughts: All nine of the tips found this article are useful and ought to be kept in mind as you (re-)focus on your content.  The one tip that seems highly relevant given our changes to these #SundayMusings write-ups is “#6 – Pay attention to trends”.  That was the main reason for moving to a topic-focused style of writing for #SundayMusings and our numbers and shares across social media have improved.  [Read more…]

Continuing our holiday spirit, this week’s #SundayMusings w/ Shore Branding has a Valentine’s Day twist to the top news in branding and digital marketing from the past week!

At the same time, I want to make a quick announcement and decision on the frequency of our #SundayMusings write-ups.  We’ll be moving to an every other week frequency moving forward due to several contributing factors.  What I would like to do is focus on a particular topic or storyline in each write-up.  This gives more time to come up with better stories that tie together under said umbrella.

#1 – How’s Your Brand’s Love Life – via Strategy-Business.com

Premise: After reading “Romancing the Brand”, the author of the article was able to ask a few questions to the author of the book about how brands can build deeper, more meaningful relationships with brands.

Thoughts: Beyond being a Valentine’s Day-related write-up, this article caught my attention for two reasons.  First, it looks like there is another branding book to put in the queue.  Second, the Radio Shack Super Bowl ad was used as an example of brand authenticity in its communication to consumers.  [Read more…]

Seven Tips When Leveraging Pinterest for Your Brand

Since launching in 2010, few social media sites have seen the rapid growth and success that has been afforded to Pinterest.  What took the network to another level, just one year later, was the launch of its iPhone app.  The platform hasn’t looked back.  When used appropriately, Pinterest can and will have a positive impact on your brand/business.

With that in mind, here are seven branding tips to consider when using Pinterest as part of your digital marketing portfolio.
