Happy holidays everyone!  Today’s #SundayMusings focus take a look at my two favorite stories related to Christmas branding.  Both campaigns were found via AdFreak.

#1 –  “Miller Lite Dresses Times Square Billboards in Huge, Handwoven Ugly Sweaters” via AdFreak.com

Thoughts:

Ugly sweaters may or may not be as popular as ever, but I still love them.  The most amazing part of this campaign from Miller Lite is that all of the ugly sweater billboards are handwoven out of yarn!  For those not interested in clicking the link above, if you are in NYC you can find the campaign on 49th and 7th.

#2 – “Reese’s Turned Gripes About Its Ugly Christmas Candy Into Funny Ads About Tree Shaming” via AdFreak.com

Thoughts:

Due to us living in a world where you have to complain about something all of the time, several people took to Twitter to complain about Reese’s Christmas tree snacks and the shape that they were coming in.  Reese’s turned it into a beautiful campaign and drove some relatively free PR out of the entire situation.

Tweet of the Week:

Despite the move to online shopping, brands still have a tremendous opportunity to build engagement with customers and the general foot traffic that passes through their stories.  While I virtually never praise their name, Apple did a nice job with their window display seen in this article.

What Christmas branding or ad campaigns caught your attention this season?  Happy holidays everyone!  Merry Christmas!

Branding and Digital Marketing

Branding and Digital Marketing

This week’s #SundayMusings is dedicated to all the dads out there as we celebrate Father’s Day with a little Father’s Day branding summary.  Here are a few write-ups from around the web that caught my attention regarding today’s holiday here in the US.

#1 – “Father’s Day 2015: Here Comes the Dadvertising Deluge” – via brandchannel.com

Premise: With today’s holiday, brands have been rolling out their Father’s Day advertisements trying to breakthrough the clutter.  Brandchannel has put together a slew of these ads in this one write-up for you to compare and contrast which brands are using the right messaging and which aren’t.

Thoughts: Angel Soft took a unique way of celebrating Father’s Day, that’s for sure.  These Dove Men+Care ads for various holidays have been really, really good in recent months.  But the winner probably goes to Goody Hair …

#2 – “Celebrating Dads on Twitter” via Twitter’s Blog

Premise: Twitter’s blog put together a bit of text analytics behind Twitter profiles.  About 2.5 million profiles have “Dad” or “Father” in their profile and their analytics team took a look at tweets that included content on fatherhood-related topics.

Thoughts: One of the items that I like most about the Twitter blog is that they pull in their own tools and tricks without being very “salesy” in the approach.  This week’s Father’s Day write-up adds a nice touch with the inclusion of a number of fatherhood tweets from users.  I will have to agree with #1 on the “Fatherhood is …” list here.

#3 – “Infographic: Need a Father’s Day Gift? These Are the Top 10 Brands Dads Desire” via AdWeek.com

Premise: Y&R did a little research on the modern dad and put together the appended infographic in this write-up on what brands are driving the strongest levels of interest with this audience.  Spoiler alert: Apple has two of the top five brands on this list with “Apple” itself at the top and the “iPad” rounding out the top five.

Thoughts: I have to say that beyond Netflix, there isn’t a single other brand in the top ten that I have any interest in.  Completely understand why Apple is on the list, though it would be nice to see Android break the top ten list here.

Not to be a stickler, but do you see the typo in the infographic?  This type of stuff drives me crazy.

#4 – “Why We Should Get Rid of Dad of the Year Language on Father’s Day” via DannyBrown.me

Premise: Interesting read from Danny Brown on pushing out the Hallmark “Father of the Year” slogans and such and that how our kids turn out is really what will ultimately drive how you are viewed as a parent down the line.

Thoughts: I wasn’t sure if this was a rant at first against Hallmark, but I then read the comments to the article and it all fell together for me.  Danny does a great job of engaging with his audience and addressing their commentary.

At the very least, some food for thought as you go about your Father’s Day!

Tweet of the Week:

MLB, along with most national sports these days, do a nice job of raising awareness for various diseases, events, and such as their respective season progresses.  A nice effort here from MLB to celebrate dads but also raise a little awareness and salience for prostate cancer.  For those of you heading to the ballpark on Sunday, look for the blue ribbon decals throughout the park for these efforts.

Have a great Sunday / Father’s Day and hope you enjoyed our Father’s Day #SundayMusings!

We are closing out February with a Valentine’s Day #SundayMusings – taking one last look at the branding and digital marketing news from brands and companies as they relate to Valentine’s Day.  Here are the holiday stories that caught my eye heading into and through the month.

#1 – “Love Across the Twittersphere” – via blog.twitter.com

Premise: The Twitter blog dives into some Twitter Analytics and how “love” is spread across the network.  Sweden comes out on top as the most “in love” country around the globe.  Twitter also takes a look at some of the most commonly used hashtags across the calendar year.

Thoughts: The Twitter blog is a great bookmark to see the latest and greatest from the site.  It hits on current and relevant news, holidays, sporting events and more.  I’m not sure what level of humor vs. sadness I find in the hashtags across the span of a calendar year.  (OK, it’s funny) [Read more…]

Sunday Musings w/ Shore Branding focusing on #CES2015 (Photo credit: PowerFormula.net)

This week’s #SundayMusings takes a look at the top news and stories from last week’s #CES2015 event in Las Vegas.  Here are a couple stories that I found to be of particular interest and then we’ve changed things up this week a bit.  Below that are a number of summary articles from around the web and what their respective highlights were from CES this year.

Did you make it to #CES2015?  What did you think?

#1 – “The Five Most Disruptions Innovations at CES 2015” – via Forbes.com

Premise: At each CES show Forbes puts together their “Big Bang Disruptors” that help move an existing market/product to new heights.  From self-driving cars to the continued evolution of health and fitness and into “augmented reality”, a number of companies moved the needle into areas that aren’t that far off into the future anymore.

Thoughts: CES help brought self-driving cars another step closer to reality.  Virtual reality gaming is essentially here.  What did you think was the most amazing or jaw-dropping innovation at CES?

What caught my eye in this article wasn’t even on Forbes’ list.  It was early in the article when they described Google Nest’s ecosystem and partner companies that are helping bring everyday chores, activities, etc. to the 21st century.  Nest will work with lightbulbs, washer and dryers, and more in an effort to make your life that much easier. (Photo credit: RealClubResorts.com)

Welcome to the last #SundayMusings of 2014!  The holiday season is in full swing and so are a number of brands with their marketing and advertising efforts.  The following stories caught my attention over the past couple of weeks regarding advertising and branding Christmas.  Enjoy!

#1 – “Brands get super creative on social media for #Christmas” – via Branded3.com

Premise: Brands continue to step it up a notch with holiday / Christmas branding efforts across social media networks.  The author picks four brands that have stood out this holiday season with their respective campaigns.

Thoughts: I love the Vine from Asda in this article!  That is essentially my Christmas wish to be able to decorate the tree that quickly.  Congratulations to UPS for winning the internet for one day with their “UPS Wishes” campaign and the video included in this article.  You can send in your wish to UPS here. Branding and Digital Marketing

Branding and Digital Marketing

Welcome to the latest edition of #SundayMusings!  This week we are going back to Black Friday to take a look at some of the brands that made news for “that day” after Thanksgiving.  Here are the stories that caught my attention:

#1 – “Thanksgiving Sets Historic Milestone as Mobile Drives More Than Half of All Shopping Traffic, Reports IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark” – via IBM.com

Premise: IBM’s Digital Analytics Benchmark found that more shopping was done via mobile on Thanksgiving and Black Friday than in any year past.  In addition, mobile outpaced PC’s for the first time and hit 52.1% of all online traffic.  On Saturday, IBM released a number of interesting statistics and breakdowns in the article.

Thoughts: A few tidbits from the final results caught my attention:

  1. While phones drove traffic, tablets drove sales – more people were purchasing on a tablet device this year.
  2. Thanksgiving sales continue to be more prevalent and are eating into Black Friday sales.  If you have been reading our articles over the past month or so, you know how I feel about this.  (Stay home on Thanksgiving also means talking to your friends and family, not staring at the computer.  SaveThanksgiving.net)
  3. Apple outpaced Android across three different metrics in Black Friday sales.  Here is a second article from Fortune focusing a little bit more on these numbers.

Happy 4th of July weekend to those of you celebrating in the US and welcome back to another #SundayMusings where this week’s focus will be on wearables! Wearables are beginning to build traction with consumers, well beyond what I tend to consider the starting point of fitness programs and apps. Let’s take a look at some of the better write-ups I’ve found over the past few weeks that revolve around wearables.

#1 – Why Wearable Technology Matters in 2014 – via Likeable.com

Premise: The wearables market is expected to double in 2014 to exceed $1.5 billion, according to Juniper Research. This presents new ways for brands to interact with consumers in varying ways. The author provides three reasons why wearables should be considered in your marketing plan moving forward.

Thoughts: Three very straightforward reasons are provided and I agree with all of them. First and foremost, to me at least, is the ability to get ahead of competition. There are a handful of major players in the space right now, but that’s it. Are you a brand struggling to turn around your archaic image? Looking for a way to become seen as a modern, innovative brand or company? You may want to consider how you can get involved in wearables.

One brand that comes to mind immediately is Radio Shack. You may remember their ad during the Super Bowl (below as well). The ad was intended to move the company’s image out of the 1980’s and into the present. Wearables might be a market worth diving into to try to continue moving the pendulum. [Read more…]

What is on your holiday wish list?

We were overdue for a new poll for a few weeks on Shore Branding, but held off in the spirit of our #SaveThanksgiving efforts.  With Thanksgiving past us, it is now time to think about what your holiday wish list looks like.  Our new poll question is simple: What is the one tech-related item that you hope to receive as a gift this month?  (Whether this is self-gifted or from someone else is unimportant…) [Read more…]

Branding and Digital Marketing

Branding and Digital Marketing

Welcome back to Sunday Musings w/ Shore Branding, the top stories in branding and digital marketing from the past week.  Let’s get right to it …

#1 – Likeable Media Introduces the Likeable Index – via GlobeNewswire.com

Premise: Likeable Media released a report on brand Likeability across their respective social media efforts.  Included in the release of the report itself, which is available for free download on the site, is the launch of Likeable Index™ – a proprietary metric from Likeable to allow brands to track their own Likeability score, but to also compare and contrast vs. competition.

Thoughts: If you have ever noticed or read down the list on our blog roll, you will find Likeable Media there – as I really enjoy what they publish.  This is a fantastic next step for the agency and its ability to sell in analytics with a proprietary metric like their index score.  I have downloaded the report this weekend and will begin to look through it in the near future.  (You may see a future blog post dedicated to the report as well.)
